From Blank Canvas to Heart on a Sleeve

Finding inspiration in the streets of Florence

There’s something a little scary about standing in front of a blank canvas. While I usually have an idea of where the painting will go and regularly paint from photographs, I realize that there’s an infinite number of variables that can influence how it comes out in the end.

Refining the variables is why I consider myself a life-long learner in the craft of painting. I regularly take classes with artists I admire and try to stay open to new ways of mixing paint, using brushes, and building the colors on a canvas that will tell the story I’m trying to convey.

This spring, I’m traveling to Florence to take a week-long painting workshop in a light filled studio that is just around the corner from the Accademia Gallery (home of Michelangelos' David)

I consider Florence to be the most beautiful city in the world. The cobblestone streets, timeless architecture, and the spirit of masters like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci are both humbling and inspirational. I am fortunate to have visited Florence many times, but this will be my first extended stay (10 days). With my family, I’ve rented an apartment in the shadow of the Duomo.

Actually picking up a brush in this historic city, studying light and shadow, playing with color balance, and practicing classic techniques should provide plenty of insights for my work at home.

Along the way, I’ll savor the food, (a classic Panzanella salad) shop for fresh produce (I think the squash blossoms will be in season) explore the local fish market (I’m leaning towards the sea bass) and visit as many out-of-the-way museums, gardens, and piazzas as possible.

So, stay tuned for my “Florence” series of paintings this summer. I plan to have a lot of fun creating new works using the inspiration I found there. But when you see them, remember it’s not just paint on canvas. It’s hours of doubt, moments of joy, and a whole lot of heart.
